Satisfaction in Food – Why It Matters

In previous blogs, we’ve been digging into what Intuitive Eating is, and the 10 principles of Intuitive Eating. So far, we’ve covered Principle 1: Reject Diet Culture, Principle 2: Honor Your Hunger, and Principle 3: Make Peace with Food. Today, we’re going to explore Principle 4: Discover the Satisfaction Factor. In our fast-paced, diet-culture focused world, we often focus on food being fuel or convenient, and forget to prioritize allowing food to be satisfying. There is an Irish proverb that says, “Laughter is brightest in the place where the food is.” So why does satisfaction in food matter so much, and how can you increase your satisfaction? We have some ideas- read on to find out more.

Why Satisfaction Matters

If we didn’t need satisfaction, we wouldn’t have restaurants, special foods around the holidays or celebrations, and we would all have an individual meal plan tailored to meet our nutrient goals in the most basic way possible. But as humans, we are evolved to desire more. Eating foods that you enjoy in an appealing environment allows for greater satisfaction, where you discover both physical and emotional satiety. Increasing satisfaction helps to develop a stronger relationship with food. Have you ever had that feeling where you’re looking for “something more” after a meal or snack? This is often due to a deficit of pleasure, and your brain knows it. When you eat for satisfaction and enjoyment, eating is less about restriction or rules, and instead, focuses on nourishment of body and soul.

Eating a special meal with friends or loved ones, or gathering at a favorite restaurant, or eating a food you only have once a year is necessary for enjoyment and better quality of life. You might be able to exist without satisfaction in your food, but it won’t be what you really need or want, and eventually, you’ll crave more. Here are a few ideas.

How to Increase Satisfaction in Food

There are many ways to increase satisfaction in food, including what you’re eating and the environment in which you’re eating. The first way to increase your satisfaction is by taking care of your physical needs. This means eating meals and snacks regularly, so when you arrive at a meal, you don’t feel overly hungry and ravenous, which can cause you to eat quickly and enjoy it less. Checking in with your body to see what you’d like to eat in the moment is also a way to increase your satisfaction factor. Do you want something warm, spicy, crunchy, sweet? Ask yourself before deciding- you’ll be more satisfied if you honor your cravings. Be sure to choose pleasant foods as well. Even if you intended your foods to be pleasant, if you take a bite of food, and it’s not what you want, or it’s not something you like upon tasting it, switching to something delicious is an effective way to up the satisfaction when you eat.

Another way to increase your satisfaction in food is to be in a nice environment. How often have you eaten while distracted by your computer or phone at your desk, or somewhere else that is hectic just to fuel yourself and move on to the next task? When possible, choosing to eat in an enjoyable atmosphere can make a world of difference. Ditch the distractions so you can focus on the smell and taste of your food. Sit alone or with people who bring you joy. Boost the scene even more with a candle, music, nice dishware, or a beautiful tablescape. Whatever brings you joy or makes your meal feel more like an event rather than a task will automatically increase your satisfaction.

Finally, tune into your senses when you eat. Slow down so you can notice the various flavors, textures, temperatures, and mouthfeel of your food. Ensure you have variety through your foods, sauces, and/or garnishes. Including both hot and cold temperatures increases the sensory experience, and losing distractions allows you to really enjoy the full meal and feel satisfied by it. Take your time to eat when you are able- remember that food is meant to be enjoyed, savored, and while it might feel tricky to do these things, it is so worthwhile.

We want you to feel like food is an important part of your day, and even though we eat multiple times a day, bringing more celebration and attention to it can really take it to the next level. For those who’ve been in eating disorder recovery, relearning the joy and enjoyment of food is an essential piece to full recovery.
